DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- Neighbors are on edge after reports of possibly dozens of pot-bellied pigs abandoned in the western part of Dinwiddie County.

About four weeks ago, animal control officers were able to seize about one dozen, including one pregnant mother which gave birth to 8 piglets.

Dinwiddie County Animal Control was first alerted to a possible animal welfare issue on Gills Bridge Road in early April. When officers arrived, they found knee-high grass and a dozen pigs either running loose or in a corral.

After working with a state veterinarian and the court system, they were able to seize the animals, but later realized that 50 to 70 of the pot bellied pigs may have made their way onto Fort Picket.

While the property owner is not a fault, the caretaker of the animals could be facing an animal cruelty charge.
