HENRICO COUNTY, Va (WTVR)- The customary flashing blue lights and officers in uniform. You'll see plenty of that Saturday at Richmond International Raceway
And on top of that, there are security measures you won't see, as law enforcement is tripling the arsenal for this race in wake of the terror attack in Boston two weeks ago.
With bomb-sniffing dogs and eyes in the sky, Virginia State Troopers, Henrico and Richmond police, Hanover deputies and federal agents go full throttle in security preparations at RIR for race weekend
"You'll see an increase in uniformed officers as well as people in the crowd where you won't know who they are," said Henrico Lt. Linda Toney.
Some race fans say the heightened security was noticeable on the drive in.
"Driving here, man, there were cops everywhere and it's normally not like that," said William Gross, a long-time race fan.
There are signs posted on fences throughout the complex, as well as information on the raceway website warning NASCAR fans about what they can and cannot bring in. Officers will assist event security at the gates and if you carry backpacks, they will certainly be checked.
"We know this is a fantastic event,” said Toney. “We just want to reinforce that everyone’s safety is the top priority. We've increased manpower and surveillance capabilities more than usual."
This is the second major outdoor sporting event since the deadly bombing at the Boston Marathon. Race fans say they want to put the brakes on talks about terror and focus more on the festivities as fans come from all over to enjoy.
"There's a little more awareness, but it's a good, good vibe," said fan Billy Liddle.
