CBS 6 News Director Bill Anderson’s departure was announced to staff last Friday, amid tornado warnings and a Boston manhunt. His last day on the job would come exactly one week later.

Despite the brief window before the bon voyage party, a covert team set out to create a farewell video.

And it was decided that the only Richmonder worthy of being the voice of our collective goodbye … was Ralph White, the eloquent and passionate former head of the James River Park System.

Why Ralph?

Bill, who held the new director position since 2008, loved to hear Ralph’s take on pretty much anything.

Ralph, renowned for his story telling ability and majestic prose, was given a brief crash course on all things Bill - which included a list of Bill’s quirks and more than a few humorous anecdotes - and asked to ad lib the farewell speech.  The two have never met; so Ralph used our suggestions and applied his own imagination and silver-tongue to the telling.

The video was played during Bill’s goodbye gathering.

You might not have ever met Bill, but we stand behind this video as a mostly true depiction of a man who will be missed at our station.
