The diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be challenging and scary for families. ASD appears to have its roots in very early brain development with the most obvious signs and symptoms emerging between 2 and 3 years of age. ASD may be one symptom in a number of genetic conditions.

The diagnosis of ASD is based on a clinical evaluation assessing the child’s behavior. At least 1 in 5 children with ASD have a genetic condition responsible for the ASD. Today, doctors at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU are utilizing genetic testing to determine the cause of ASD to help them to tailor treatment and educational therapies that are beneficial to the child and their family.
