(CNN) — A total of 34 people and 23 entities have been indicted in an Internet and telephone illegal gambling operation that took in more than $1 billion in bets, the Department of Justice said Wednesday.
Authorities said Bartice Alan King of Spring, Texas, and others used a business called Legendz Sports beginning in 2003 to illegally take wagers by Internet and phone from Costa Rica and then Panama.
The people indicted were employees of Legendz Sports. The 23 businesses allegedly were used by Legendz Sports to help with gambling operations, pay winnings to gamblers, own the websites used and launder money, the Justice Department said in a news release.
The indictment alleges that Legendz Sports solicited millions of illegal bets totaling over $1 billion.
