Charter bus driver charged in crash that killed one

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Virginia State police confirmed one person died when a charter bus overturned on Route 58 at Route 652 in Capron, Virginia. The single-vehicle accident happened Friday at 7:05 in the morning.

Virginia State police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the driver of the bus - which was headed from Chapel Hill, NC to Hampton - lost control and flipped the bus into a ditch. Two of the eight passengers on the bus were thrown from the vehicle.

One of those passengers, identified by police as 58-year-old Doval Emmanuel Watson of Chapel Hill, died as a result of the crash. The other passenger thrown from the bus was flown to Norfolk General Hospital with what police called "major injuries."

Police said the bus was bringing students to Hampton University's Open House Day.

Police said six other passengers were students ranging from the ages of 13 to 17 have all been examined and have suffered no injuries.

The owner of the bus, Horizon Coach Lines, is based out of Seattle, Washington. The driver, Larry Brocks, age 62, of Raleigh, NC, has been charged with reckless driving, police said.

Once the investigation is completed and consultation with the Commonwealth  Attorney, other charges may be pending.
