RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -The fire that burned the building that houses the Sub Rosa Bakery along the 600 block of N. 25th Street has been ruled accidental, according to Richmond Fire Department spokesman Lt. Robbie Hagaman. Hagaman said the actual cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Hagaman said fire crews had to go through the window to rescue two people trapped in an apartment above the bakery because fire blocked their only way out. No one was injured. The Red Cross arrived on scene to help one of the fire victims.

The fire, which was reported around 12:45 a.m., was marked under control about one hour later.

“As many of you have heard an accidental fire of unknown origin has left a substantial part of the Sub Rosa complex in a state of disrepair,” a note posted on the bakery’s website read. “We are now working on the logistics of rebuilding and will be in touch when we now more and as this ‘new construction’ unfolds. Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers.”

Neighbors in Church Hill have started an online campaign to raise money for the recovery effort. Click here for more information.

Additionally the local food community is helping raise money in various ways, and a big fundraiser will be held next week, on April 11, at the Hardywood Park Craft Brewery benefit.
