RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- Richmond-area employees are joined hundreds of thousands of workers nationwide Wednesday to improve their health.

Companies including Bon Secours Virginia Hospitals,  Dominion and HDL Inc. challenged their employees to get out and walk to commemorate National Walking Day.

The main local event was held at Brown's Island.

Organizers said more and more jobs across the country are becoming increasingly sedentary.

"We know it's very important to have people more active [and]  get people away from their desks for a little bit," said one participant.

According to the American Heart Association, research shows Americans are working 164 more hours a year than we were 20 years ago.
