CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- Police are now investigating the death of a woman found inside a Chester house as a homicide.

Police said the change came after an autopsy Wednesday showed that the victim had been shot.

According to family members, Madalyn Carey's body was found after fire fighters were called to a home on Duxton Drive Tuesday morning.

After fire crews put out the house fire, Carey's body was discovered in a back bedroom.

A candlelight vigil has been planned for Carey Wednesday night outside Virginia College on at 7200 Midlothian Turnpike at 5 p.m.

"A precious jewel, just like a daughter and she was a sweet person, kind, loving and she would just do anything she could do to help anybody," Judith Epps, Madalyn's Godmother, told CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil.

Police have ruled the house fire "suspicious" and are now looking for a man who lived in the home Carey rented. Lloyd Edward Warren Jr., 46, may be driving a black 2009 Nissan Altima bearing Virginia license plates WWA-2759.

According to Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor,  Warren was a Sergeant at Nottoway Correctional Center up until April 2011.

"I know that they were acquaintances but other than that, couldn't really tell you too much about him," Marcus Carey, Madalyn's younger brother, said. "I'm hoping that someone knows him, knows of him, or seen him and will turn him in."

Police asked anyone with any information about this case to call 804-748-1251.
