RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)–Law enforcement agencies around the world increasingly use social media as a way to connect with their communities, and Richmond Police are no exception; the argument could be made that they have an oustanding social media presence.

So on Friday, March 22, 2013, the RPD will join agencies worldwide, mostly all from the United States but from as far away as Austraila, for the first ever Global Tweet-A-Thon.

The event is basically a virtual ride along via the RPD’s Twitter account. There’s no mention in the official press release if the public are encouraged to ask questions, but it would follow that social media is social, so feel free to ask any burning questions.

In Richmond, Fourth Precinct Master Patrol Officer Al Joyner will be behind the helm of the account. Joyner has been with the department 18 years, patrolling in the Fourth precinct more than a decade.

Public Relations Officer Dionne Waugh will ride along and handle the tweeting, providing information about the police work and issues going on that day, and in general.

Agencies will tweet using the same hashtag #poltwt.

There are currently more than 100 agencies participating from the U.S., Canada, UK, Sweden, Iceland, and Australia. Any agency can join the Tweet-a-thon and tweet any portion of the 24-hour period.
