RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – While Northern Virginia will be much cooler Saturday, the opposite end of the Commonwealth will feel more like Spring. With just enough moisture and several other factors coming together, thunderstorms capable of strong wind gusts and large hail.

One factor: afternoon highs in Southern Virginia reaching the upper 60s and low 70s, with dew point temperatures into the 50s. Another factor: surface forcing provided by an approaching cold front from the North. There will also be an upper-level disturbance tracking through the region aloft, providing lift and energy for storm development.

The most likely time for these strong to potentially severe thunderstorms would be from mid-afternoon through sunset as the cold front tracks south toward the North Carolina state line. This boundary will stall in North Carolina Sunday, keeping Virginia in the chillier air for St. Patrick’s Day.
