Snow causes over 500 crashes across state

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- The snow blowing through the Commonwealth Wednesday has caused over 500 crashes across the state, but that number is expected to rise.

Virginia State Police said that the majority of crashes involved damaged vehicles. There  have been no reported traffic fatalities from the storm.

However, officials warned drivers to watch for downed trees and power lines as winds pick up across the state.

Virginia state police said the busiest areas for crews are in Metro-Richmond.

In fact, troopers have responded to 59 crashes in Richmond, 38 in Culpeper and 47 in our Appomattox division.

Dispatchers have also responded to the increased calls for service as the weather deteriorates throughout the state. 2,067 calls for service have come into our Communications Centers.

State Troopers are still handling 64 calls for service, with 24 of those being traffic crashes and another 17 for disabled vehicles as of 2:30 p.m.
