RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)--Sunday night, a shot fired off inside the Canal Club, when it was packed with 400 customers.

Club goers scrambled to get outside and police raced to the scene. No one was injured.

Major Scott Booth confirmed a shot was fired inside and  he said the event is still concerning because Richmond Police Department has worked hand in hand with businesses and neighbors to fight crime in the bottom.

“We have consistently doubled our efforts during peak times,” he said, which includes foot and bike patrols in addition.

Katie Elmore works nearby and doesn't want the incident to cast a permanent cloud over the bottom.

“When you have mass amounts of people, someone's gonna act ridiculous,” she says.

So far this year police have responded to 11 calls at the Canal Club. In 2012 there were 53 service calls to the business.

Charles Willis, with the group Citizens Against Crime,  is glad club owners are taking action immediately.

He said he has been assured owners “will increase security at all of the exits,” and that they are also “open to listening to other suggestions coming from RPD.”

Police still don’t know who fired the gun. They ask anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 780-1000.
