HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- Henrico County School leaders are taking extra steps to keep students safe in the classroom in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

The school district said Tuesday that it will invest nearly $400,000 to improve security at all schools, to include:

  • Installing door access security at all elementary, middle, and select specialty center high schools.
  • Building anterior entrances at Hermitage and Highland Springs High that will ensure all visitors enter the main office before getting full entry to the schools.
  • Changing interior locks so that staff members won't have to use multiple keys.
  • Using Key Pad Entry for faculty members who have access to secure parts of schools.

Administrators said the improvements were already being considered before they held the county's first Safety and Security Forum last month.

However, many of the measures were also suggested by parents during the community meeting.
