RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Richmond Police detectives who interviewed Eli Webb the day Webb turned himself in to police took the stand Tuesday in Webb's hit and run trial.
Detectives read to the jury a typed prepared statement Webb and his attorneys turned in to police the day he was interviewed. The statement included an apology to the family of Lanie Kruszewski.
Webb, 31, is accused of leaving the scene of a deadly accident last summer on River Road in Richmond. Police said Webb hit Kruszewski while she rode her bicycle at night. Webb came forward days after the accident and told police he thought he had hit a deer.
The detectives testified about evidence found at the scene and evidence obtained from in and around Webb's SUV. They spoke of white paint on the SUV's hood and red pieces of plastic.
Detectives also presented hair samples taken from the SUV's smashed windshield. The hair was identified as belonging to Laine Kruszewski.
Another forensic tech, who processed Webb's Dodge Durango, said he found hair belonging to an animal on the vehicle. The tech said he personally took the animal hair sample to the FBI lab in Quantico to have it analyzed. The tech never said from what kind of animal the hair came. Neither the prosecution nor the defense pressed the tech for answers.
Testimony continued Tuesday afternoon after a break for lunch.
