ALBERMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- A cemetery with human remains is causing a roadblock for the development of a Virginia highway.

VDOT has already realigned that stretch along Route 29, so that it doesn't interfere with a cemetery for pets.

But now that the route has been finalized, a historic African American cemetery that dates back to the 1800s has been discovered

The Albemarle County supervisor said it is a good thing it was found now.

"Actually, it's a good thing they've uncovered it at this point because my understanding of it is that VDOT often will uncover these as they're building when they're in the construction phase."

VDOT is communicating with the descendants of those buried there who are still in Central Virginia.

Now there are questions about whether this will hinder construction.

VDOT released a statement saying in party, they are working with the family and the Department of Historic Resources to figure out the appropriate action.

However, completely realigning the road could be costly and time consuming.
