YONKERS, N.Y. (WCBS) -- Two people have been rescued after a planed crashed into the Hudson River in New York early Sunday evening.

The small plane went down in the water near Yonkers, New York.

A spokesperson from the Yonkers Police Department said a boat, operated by an off-duty police officer, was able to get close enough to pull a man and a woman from the River.

Both had been in the water for as long as 30 minutes and appeared to be suffering the effects of hypothermia. Rescuers said the two were wearing life vests.

The pair were taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment. Officials there say they are both in stable condition.

Authorities said the plane, described as a Piper PA-32 single engine aircraft, is completely submerged in the Hudson River.

"We're several hundred yards south of where we believe the plane went down and where the individuals were rescued," Yonkers Police Officer Gardner. "They were going with the tide south of the exact location the device is on, and they were south of here."

When asked about the status of the two people that were on the plane, Gardner said the pair were suffering hypothermia, but did not have other information.
