HENRICO, Va (WTVR) – Fire crews are working to clear smoke from an early morning fire at a warehouse complex near Richmond International Raceway.

According to Henrico Fire Capt. Jim Mellon an employee at the S&P Recycling Center at the 4200 block of Carolina Ave. saw smoke coming from a building early this morning.

The employee went inside to check things out and found a piece of machinery on fire. That employee attempted to put the fire with a fire extinguisher, but then pulled the fire alarm.

Fire crews responded to the alarm, arriving on the scene a little after 7:00 a.m.

Crews extinguished the fire quickly, Mellon said, but are now working to try and clear a large amount of smoke trapped inside the 30,000 square foot warehouse.

Mellon describes it as a “cold smoke,” meaning it’s very hard to move and disperse.
