“Can they hear me out there? Well, I hope Percy ain’t going to wet the sponge,” Gleason said just before the execution. “Put me on the highway going to Jackson and call my Irish buddies. Pog Mo Hoin. God Bless.”

Pog Mo Hoin is a Gaelic phrase that translates to “kiss my ass.”

The execution was carried out at 9:08 p.m. without complications, according to Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor.

Gleason met with a spiritual adviser earlier in the this afternoon, Traylor said. Family members of Gleason’s victims were expected to attend the execution.

“Gleason has expressed no remorse for these horrific murders. He has not sought to appeal his convictions and has not filed a petition for clemency,” Governor Bob McDonnell said in a statement prior to the execution. “Despite the fact that he has not filed a petition for clemency, I have still reviewed the procedural history and the facts surrounding the convictions. I have found no compelling reason to intercede. Accordingly, I decline to intervene.”
