GLOUCESTER, Va. (WTVR) – Three children and an adult were killed in an early-morning house fire in Gloucester, according to a report on WTKR.com.The fire happened around 2:30 a.m. along the 6000 Summerville Drive.

“They found the building totally engulfed in flames,” an unidentified firefighter told the DailyPress.com. “We were told there were four people trapped inside.”

The children are ages seven, five and two-months, according to WTKR.com. The Norfolk-based television station reports the children’s grandmother initially made it out of the home but went back inside in an attempt to rescue the children.

The Daily Press reports an adult managed to flee the flames by jumping from one of the home’s windows.

The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office said that person and another adult were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Virginia State Police investigators are working to determine what started the fire.

Additionally, officials with Gloucester County Public Schools were working to address the tragedy.

“The staff at Bethel (elementary school) and the entire school community are quite saddened about this tragic incident and the loss of four lives,” Superintendent Ben Kiser of Gloucester Public Schools told the Daily Press.
