RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Doctors say the flu virus is hitting Virginia hard  this year.

In fact, an updated from the CDC shows the Commonwealth in the red zone, which is the highest category for flu cases reported in states.

Doctors say the reason the flu might be so bad this year is because last year was so mild.

“Because we din’t see much in the way of flu last year, a lot of people didn’t get the chance to be exposed to it last year. Probably for a lot of people in the general population their resistance to the flu is low,” Dr. Robert Gormley said.

The CDC is trying to combat that with frequent tracking and updates through social media.

However, doctors say the best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu shot.
