Police ID victim in New Year’s Eve homicide

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — Richmond police have released the name of the man found shot dead in East Richmond on New Year’s Eve.

Richmond Police Department spokesperson Gene Lepley said in an email Tuesday that 28-year-old Michael Excell Alexander, was discovered on the ground at the corner of 29th and Newbourne street.

That’s a couple of blocks away from Creighton Court and in between Fairfield and Nine Mile Roads.

Police said Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene. Lepley said the medical examiner will determine the exact cause and manner of death.

Police said they are looking for two suspects, described as black males wearing all black, who were spotted fleeing the scene.

Alexander’s death is the city’s 42nd homicide, slightly higher than the 39 homicides in 2011.
