Richmond, VA (WTVR) – Local police are taking steps to keep you safe behind the wheel this holiday season.

On Thursday, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving and Richmond and Henrico Police held a news conference urging you to drive safer by making sure you buckle up. If you do drink at your holiday gatherings, have a designated driver. If you don’t police say they will catch you and you will be arrested.

“It’s not just about catching people who are breaking the law, it’s about helping those who follow the law get home safely as well,” says Henrico Police Chief Doug Middleton.

In 2011, 245 people were killed by drunk drivers on Virginia roads. Police say 100% of those deaths were avoidable.
