(WTVR) — NBC news confirms that longtime foreign correspondent Richard Engel, along with two members of his production crew and a security guard have been released after five days of captivity in Syria.

At this time those that captured Engel have not been identified. NBC believes that the captors, “were not believed to be loyal to the Assad regime.”

NBC says two of the captors were killed in a shootout at a checkpoint operated by Syrian rebels.

Engel is NBC’s chief foreign correspondent with much of his career taking place in the Middle East. He was captured while covering the Syrian civil war.

Engel and his crew made their way into Turkey from Syria where they will be evaluated.
