COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WTVR) — VCU doctors are optimistic they have saved the life of a little boy from Colonial Heights who has a rare form of childhood leukemia.

CBS 6 News first told you about 2-year-old old Quinlan Thomas in August when his father’s insurance company refused to pay for an experimental treatment that his doctor said could potentially cure his disease.

A bone marrow drive was held in September for Quinlan, but his doctor decided to try a stem cell transplant.

Quinlan’s father Tony Thomas said the stem cell transplant was a success and tests last week show his son’s body is free of leukemia.

Thomas said Quinlan will be monitored over the next several months and if all goes well, he could be considered cured in one year.
