MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WTVR) — One Virginia school district is welcoming cell phones into classrooms after the devices were banned in many other districts across the country.

Many schools consider them a distraction and don’t allow them on campus. But the Martinsville School District is encouraging kids to use them. Teachers say they’re a valuable teaching tool.

“Information changes so quickly now, that they can get more up-to-date source information,” says Spanish teacher Tonya Snyder. “If this is something that motivates the students and we can use it in the appropriate way then why not give them the opportunity to use their cell phones as a learning tool.”

As for those kids that don’t have smartphones? The district is providing them with a laptop or Ipad to use in class.
