RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- The man who allegedly assaulted a Virginia state trooper during a traffic stop in Richmond Tuesday afternoon has been apprehended.
CBS 6 News' Jon Burkett said the suspect was caught after a two-hour search in the Midlothian Turnpike corridor in South Richmond.
Burkett said state police and Richmond police, along with K-9 officers, surrounded the LTV building in the 100 block of Giant Drive.
A man inside said he was confronted by the suspect, who he found hiding behind some boxes. Police then surrounded the building, went inside and captured the suspect.
The officer, R.J. Barrett is recovering at home after suffering serious injuries from the attack.
State police said the trooper, who was stopped in a work zone just before 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Route 60 and German School Road, tried to stop an argument between two subjects when the assault took place.
John Hensley, who was painting stripes on the road, told Burkett he saw what happened. He said he saw a scuffle between the driver who had been pulled over on the property of a forklift company.
"It escalated for no apparent reason," Hensley said. He also said the trooper was "scuffed up and had some blood on his face" after the attack.
Hensley also told Burkett that the when the suspect ran off, he was tackled by an employee at the forklift company. However, the suspect managed to escape.
Authorities said the trooper, who suffered serious cuts and a possible concussion, was taken to Chippenham Medical Center.
Police said the suspect was spotted heading east back towards the city before he was taken into custody.
State Police and the City of Richmond Police, with the assistance of State Police Aviation and tracking canines, conducted an intensive search for the suspect.
Police located White nearly two hours later in the 100 block of Giant Drive and he was taken into custody without further incident.
He was transported to the City of Richmond Jail and is being held without bond pending his arraignment Wednesday morning in the Manchester General District Court. White was charged with attempted capital murder, malicious wounding, resisting arrest, possession of a firearm while a convicted felon, concealed weapon, and possession of a firearm with no serial number.
