Fruitcake not so indestructible after all, deflates in parade

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)—Eyebrows might have quizzically raised over the debut of a 17-foot high fruitcake in Saturday’s Christmas parade, but when it comes down to it, nothing says holidays like fruitcake.

And nothing seems to say Christmas parade on Broad Street like menacing traffic lights.

In 2010, the face-puncture of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer became a viral sensation.

Rudolph put in an appearance at Saturday’s parade with his wounds all healed, but this time it was the giant fruitcake that took a hit.

The 22 handlers of the giant cake had a hard time getting it under the stoplight at Allen and Broad Streets. In the video you can see the jellied fruit graze the light. Shortly thereafter, the float deflated.

It proves the seemingly indestructible fruitcake—the oldest one on record has been preserved since 1878—is vulnerable after all.

Over, the past three years, an exhibit at the Science Museum, called Fruitcake Science, closely examined the best ways to torture a fruitcake by undergoing such experiments as smashing, drooping and applying liquid nitrogen to the nutty, candied cake.
