RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The strong cold front that swept through Virginia early Tuesday morning will lead to several cold mornings in the 30s to around freezing. As a result, the City of Richmond is opening a Cold Weather Overflow Shelter for tonight, November 13, Wednesday, November 14, and Thursday, November 15.

Each of these nights, temperatures will fall well below the 40-degree-threshold for opening a City shelter. The Metro should be in the low to mid 30s Wednesday through Friday mornings.

“The overflow shelter is located at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, 14 West Duval Street,” the mayor’s press secretary wrote in an email. “The shelter opens at 7 p.m. and closes the following morning at 6 a.m. Food will not be provided and pets are not allowed.”

If you (or someone you know) need to use this shelter, check in first at the Commonwealth Catholic Charities Central Intake by 5 p.m. each of these evenings, located at the Freedom House Conrad Center, 1400 Oliver Hill Way, next to the Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and the Richmond City Jail. You will then be referred to the Cold Weather Overflow Shelter until all beds are filled.

In addition to the Cold Weather Overflow Shelter this week, the Richmond’s Department of Social Services (DSS) will accept Crisis Assistance applications (to assist with furnace repair or replacement and security deposits on a primary heating source) through March 15, 2013, at 900 East Marshall Street, Monday through Friday; from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Richmond residents can also call the Fuel Line at (804) 646-7046 for help. Qualifying residents can also receive from the DSS emergency assistance with gas and electric disconnection notices.

Elderly or residents with disabilities should contact Senior Connections for assistance at (804) 343-3000, Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
