RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The City of Richmond has opened its first new fire station in 18 years.

Fire Station 17, located on Semmes Avenue in South Richmond, is more than double the size of the old one, which was built in 1917 for horse drawn equipment.

The new fire station features new, faster opening doors and other equipment, designed to help crews get to fires and other emergencies faster.

Mayor Dwight Jones says the new fire station was paid for using mostly federal stimulus money.
