FULL LIST: Local shelters open for safety during Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall around 7 p.m. and the worst is yet to come for the metro-area and Virginia. The worst of the storm will likely be from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. in the metro-area. 

Below is a list of shelters. Also, make sure to save theseimportant phone numbers into your phone. 

If you’re looking for shelter from Hurricane Sandy, you can also use this handy tool courtesy of FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency:

Many states along the Mid-Atlantic and the East Coast have shelters open in response to Hurricane Sandy. Search for an open shelter by texting SHELTER + a zip code to 43362 (4FEMA).

Here’s an example text message: Shelter 23226

RICHMOND SHELTERS:

Linwood Holton elementary school on the Northside, 1600 West Laburnum Ave.

J.H. Blackwell elementary school on the Southside,1600 Everett Street 

GRTC is providing transportation to the emergency relief shelters as needed. Click here to get the five different routes.

CHESTERFIELD SHELTER

Meadowbrook High School, 4901 Cogbill Road
*dinner will be served by the Red Cross

HENRICO SHELTERS:

Elko Middle School, 5901 Elko Road

John Rolfe Middle School, 6901 Messer Road

Shelters opening at 6 p.m.

Food and bottled water will be provided; residents with special dietary needs should bring their own food.

Blankets and basic bedding will be provided; residents should bring their own pillows, toiletries, medicines and other comfort items. Residents are welcome to bring their electronic devices for recharging.

Pets are allowed at the shelters. With the exception of service animals, pets will be kept in a separate location at the shelter. Residents will need to provide food for their pets.
