RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Light, color and fluidity. Artist Dale Chihuly says those three factors are three big reasons why he loves working with glass.

Chihuly, who is widely credited with revolutionizing the studio glass movement, was at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in Richmond Wednesday. His exhibit at the VMFA is scheduled to open Oct. 20 and run through Feb. 10.

Chihuly and his team tailored the exhibit to the museum.

“I was able to design the rooms the size that I wanted to,” Chihuly said after leading a small group of media around on a private tour. “I made installations work in the space. The Tumbleweed, that space happened to be there so I made a little piece that went into that space. We knew we wanted to do the Laguna Torcello, so we made it according to the size of that room.”

During the tour Chihuly described the installations and shared stories about how they came to be. He said the Laguna Torcello was inspired by his favorite place in the world, an island lagoon in Venice.
