CONCORD, N.C. (WTVR) – The recent concern about athletes and concussions is not isolated to the NFL.

Thursday the spokesperson for Hendrick Motorsports notified media outlets that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will not compete in the upcoming NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The statement says Earnhardt, who drives the number 88 Chevrolet, was diagnosed Wednesday with a concussion. Team member Regan Smith will take Earnhardt’s place.

Doctors say Earnhardt sustained the concussion during the race October 7 in Talladega, Alabama.
