HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - The North Gayton Road extension project that began in 2009 opened to drivers Saturday afternoon, and officials believe the 2.1 mile extension will help alleviate traffic in the Short Pump area.

The extension now runs north from Short Pump at West Broad Street, goes over Interstate 64, and connects two miles later with Pouncey Tract Road.

"I think it's going to solve a lot of problems, especially for people who live in this area,” says Mary Lewis, who frequents Short Pump often.

The bill for the project was paid in full by the county with a referendum approved by county voters in 2005.

The road was originally scheduled to open in July, but construction delays postponed that date until Saturday.

One thing that seems like it can't be delayed is the growth of Short Pump, and drivers say the new extension will ease the traffic congestion around there.

“This kind of project helps the area grow.  More convenience you can offer to the public the better the area is going to grow.  So this is a wise move,” says Umesh Dalal, who lives in Henrico.

It's estimated that 15,000 cars will use the extension on a daily basis.

Some folks that frequent the area have grown accustom to seeing construction barrels.

Though, certain lanes will remain closed while the contractor finishes up some final details, optimism from some drivers about the affect of the extension rolls smoother than tires on new pavement.

“It will help the traffic I'm absolutely sure,” says Ruta Starke, who lives near Short Pump.
