RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) - Hours before debating each other, incumbent Congressman Eric Cantor and Democratic nominee Wayne Powell sat down with CBS 6 to discuss the race and the issues.

"I believe my record in Congress reflects a common sense Conservative who can help take America forward," Cantor told CBS 6.

"Regardless of the letter I've got by my name I believe in fiscal responsibility and I believe we need to be able to pay for the wars we need to be in," Powell said.

Cantor is no stranger to voters in the 7th District, serving since 2001. His national profile has skyrocketed in recent years because of leadership positions he's obtained within the Congress, highlighted by his tenure as House Majority Leader.

"I've never moved my family to Washington, I come home here every week. After all, one of the roles of a Congressman is to be with constituents," Cantor said.

However, Powell believes it is time for a change in leadership, running a campaigning of attacking Cantor for past positions on key issues.

Powell is a veteran of the military, a lawyer, and for the most part a novice politician.
This is his first election he has run in.

Powell contends he is not "running away" from the Democrats or President Obama despite the fact it mentions no where on his signs he is a Democrat.

"No I am not running away from President Obama, not at all," Powell said.

"I agree with him when I agree with him and I may add I disagree with my party far more than Eric Cantor does," Powell adds.

On the issues, Powell said he is in favor of the Affordable Care Act although he would suggest modifications.

Cantor said he wants the bill repealed.

Cantor wants all of the Bush tax cuts extended, while Powell wants those who make more than $500,000 to pay more.

Both want defense cuts through sequestration to be rationed.
