RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Anonymous text messages were sent to Virginia voters accusing U.S. Senate candidate and former Governor Tim Kaine of wanting to impose a “radical tax on all Americans.”

Kaine’s campaign office says that the anonymous text messages sent to Hampton Roads area voters make false claims.

Kaine for Virginia Communications Director Brandi Hoffine released a statement stating the campaign did not send the messages, nor do they know who did.

“Voters have every right to be concerned about this breach of privacy,” said Hoffine in the statement.

“It’s one thing to subject people to millions of dollars of false TV ads. It’s another thing to invade their privacy with misleading text messages to their personal cell numbers.  This is beneath the standard Virginia expects from its public officials.”

“We urge whoever is behind these misleading messages to discontinue their dirty campaign tricks,” Hoffine added.

The campaign has encouraged officials, including the Attorney General of Virginia, to launch an investigation “to get answers for Virginia voters and put a stop to these scurrilous tactics”

The message sent out claims that Gov. Kaine supports a “radical new tax on all Americans.”

A similar charge made by Kaine’s Senate opponent George Allen was ruled today by Politifact VA as false.

Kaine sent out a tweet saying “Anon text msgs didn’t come from my campaign-I share voters’ concerns about breach of privacy & call for investigation.”
