CRANSTON, RI (WTVR) – A school district in Rhode Island is getting national attention after it banned “father-daughter” dances because of a complaint from a single mother.

According to the Providence Journal, Cranston schools banned the dance, along with similar “mother-son” activities, because they violate state law.

The district told theProvidence Journalthat father-son and mother-daughter events are exempt from federal laws banning gender discrimination. However, that is not the case with state law, so they decided to stop having them.

This all started after the superintendent of schools received a letter from The American Civil Liberties Union about a single mother that had complained her daughter was not able to attend the daddy-daughter dance.
