RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - College basketball coaches have been known to recruit top talent at a young age. Some students receive interest from college coaches as early as middle school.

So if you spotted VCU men's basketball coach Shaka Smart walking around a Richmond elementary school this morning, you may have thought there was a really young player who sparked his interest.

That was not the case.

Instead Smart spoke to a room full of students at Carver Elementary School and encouraged them to do their best this school year.

"There are two different ways of learning. You can look at it as something you have to do or you can look at it was something you get to do," Smart said. "Too often in our society it's the first one. Not often enough are we excited about going to school and learning and taking advantage of the opportunities there."

VCU players work with students at Carver throughout the school year.
