(CNN) – If the economy picks up, you may be spending any extra cash you make buying baby gifts.

Demographic experts say the recession has stifled birth rates in America, and they may bottom out in 2012.

Potential parents worried about money have been postponing pregnancy.  But according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women still want on average, 2.3 kids.

More women than ever before are ages 20 to 35 — what the government considers “prime childbearing years.”

University of Kentucky researchers say historically, baby booms have followed economic recessions with quick recoveries.

It’s unclear when the expected “baby boomlet” will begin, though, because this recovery has been so sluggish.
