RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Fighting crime in Richmond took on a different look Tuesday night with a lot of dancing, singing and even martial arts.

That’s a contrast to the horrific crime scenes galvanizing residents within the last few weeks, including the death of a family dollar store clerk along Jeff Davis Highway and an apartment building shooting on the city's Southside.

“We need the communication with citizens to help us solve crimes,” said Captain John Hall with Richmond Police.

Hall said many crimes in the city have been solved because of credible tips from residents and neighbors looking out for each other. That’s what National Night Out is intended to foster.

One Battery Park resident said this night makes a difference and he feels much safer after getting to know his neighbors.

That’s consistent with a survey from NextDoor.com which finds 67 percent of homeowners feel comfortable when they know their neighbors.

“When neighbors know each other and love each other, they look out for each other,” said that Battery Park resident.

While it appears the adults may have been having a little more fun than the kids, this night was truly about the little ones.

“We have to do something for the young kids who think it's better to rob and hurt each other,” said one resident.

National Night Out didn’t just take place in Richmond today, but, throughout the country.
