VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A man has died two days after a surfer rescued him from the ocean at Virginia Beach.

Police told WTKR that Joseph Gall, 76, of Lincoln Park, Mich., died Tuesday at a hospital.

Gall was in the water with a group of four to five others on Sunday when they began struggling at the Oceanfront at 60th Street.

Beachgoers on the shore noticed the group struggling and several went in to help.  The crowd was initially able to pull everyone back to shore aside from Gall, who was later pulled in by a surfer.

The official cause of death hasn’t been determined.

Gall’s passing marks second death in the area within a month. On July 1, 10-year-old Lakee Copeland of Chesapeake drowned after he stepped off a sandbar.
