RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run accident in Richmond.

Police told CBS 6 News that a female cyclist was struck and killed at River Road and Bridgeway Road Sunday night.  The hunt is now underway for the fatal hit-and-run driver, who police said left the scene.

"It looks like she was apparently struck by a vehicle and the vehicle fled.  So that's what detectives have to go on right now," said James Mercante with the Richmond Police Department.

River Road was closed for several hours, as detectives worked to piece together what happened.  Henrico Police assisted with the investigation by helping control late night traffic.

The area where the crash happened is tight for cars, let alone bikes.  David Oakley at Agee's Bicycle shop in Carytown offered some advice on how to safely navigate the city on two wheels.  Oakley said it is vital for any cyclist to grab the attention of passing motorists.

"Stronger reflectors mean you can see it from a greater distance, and we've always felt the tail light is maybe even more important than the headlight since this is the traffic that is coming up behind you," said Oakley.

Officials said they are in the first stages of investigation and will release more details as they become available.
