RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - The Virginia Historical Society (VHS) is hosting its annual FREE Family Day Open House Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The book sale is certainly one of the most popular features of the open house.

In fact, VHS' Jennifer M. Guild told CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil that people starting lining up around 9 a.m. for a chance to peruse the more than 4,000 books for sale for discounted prices.

The books, which were donated by supporters, are an important fundraising effort for the society. The profits from the sale fund the museum's educational programs.

Additionally, behind-the-scenes tours and special looks at some of the museum's collections are available during the open house.

Conservationists are also providing a rare look at what they do. Guild said some of the experts are demonstrating their craft by restoring some Civil War murals.

The society, which is celebrating its 100 year anniversary this year, is located at 428 North Boulevard in Richmond. Admission to the museum is always free.
