RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) –  Emergency construction has been extended on Interstate 95 thru Richmond this morning. The 2 right lanes are closed at Laburnum. There’s a 4 mile backup on 95 South and a 2 mile backup on 64 East.

VDOT reports work on 95 south between Laburnum Avenue (mm 79) and Lombardy Street bridge (mm 77) is expected to continue until about 10:00 am.

Only one lane of 95 south is open in that area, all northbound lanes are open.

Expect major delays.

VDOT encouraged drivers to use Route 1 south or I-295 south to avoid delays.

The work was extended Thursday morning after crews demolishing a pier cap overnight under the Lombardy Street bridge and encountered problems, VDOT spokeswoman Dawn Eischen wrote in an email to CBS 6.

Eischen said temporary supports are in place to carry traffic, but those supports cannot carry the all lanes of traffic.

She adds the work is being done under the bridge, so drivers on I-95 won’t see work crews on the bridge.
