Influential filmmaker Nora Ephron dies at age 71

Legendary writer/director Nora Ephron passed away today after a battle with cancer.

Her son, Jacob Bernstein, told the The New York Times she died from pneumonia brought on by leukemia.

Dr. Gail Roboz, Ephron’s oncologist, told CBS News she died at 7:40 p.m. ET from acute myeloid leukemia at Weil-Cornell/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

Ephron is best remembered for classic films “When Harry Met Sally,” “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail.”

Most recently, she wrote and directed the 2009 film “Julie and Julia” starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.

Ephron also penned several books, including “I Feel Bad About My Neck.”

She leaves behind a husband, writer and filmmaker Nicholas Pileggi, and two children from her previous marriage to Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein.

Ephron was 71-years-old.
