PETERSBURG, Va (WTVR) – Wesley T. Carter, Virginia Union University’s oldest living alumnus, passed away on Monday, June 25 at the age of 104, according to a release from the University.

Carter, ’29, was an avid VUU sports fan–attending every road and home football and basketball game, including the school’s home basketball finale against Bowie State on February 20 of this year.

According to Virginia Union, Carter was also the nation’s oldest living Phi Beta Sigma brother.

While in school, Carter played basketball with the Richmond Phi Beta Sigma team alongside greats such as “Puff” Taylor and “Stretch” Gardner.

In 2007, Carter was recognized that year by the United Negro College Fund as the “Outstanding Alumnus of Year”. Carter, a career educator, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2008.

Carter would have turned 105 on August 22.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
