(CNN) — We can already envision the long lines of kids and kids-at-heart who would queue up to see a “Sesame Street” movie on the big screen.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox has picked up the rights to the famous children’s TV show, and has a writer on board to pen the script.

Longtime “Sesame Street” writer Joey Mazzarino is said to be signed on for the project, as well as producers Shawn Levy, Michael Aguilar, Mark Gordon and others.

Of course “S.S.” is home to some of the most beloved characters in the world, including Big Bird; Bert and Ernie; Grover; Oscar the Grouch; Cookie Monster; and Elmo.

They all star in the long-running children’s education program on PBS that has already spawned two big-screen projects, 1985’s “Follow That Bird” (featuring Big Bird) and 1999’s “The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland.”

The far-reaching appeal of this new film is obvious: it’s estimated that about one in three Americans has watched the show since it debuted in 1969, plus it has been broadcast in dozens of countries.

The studio has yet to comment on the report.
