Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy fatally shoots man

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A 49-year-old man has died after being shot by a Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy Tuesday night.

Virginia State Police said this began around 8:30 p.m. when the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about shots fired at a house on Stoney Point Road in Cumberland Courthouse.

When a deputy arrived, officials said an armed man confronted the deputy.

Officials said the man refused to comply with the deputy’s commands to put down his handgun. As a result, the deputy shot the man.

Virginia State Police said 49-year-old Bennett McKay, of Cumberland Courthouse, died at the scene.

McKay’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy.

The deputy, who was not injured, has been placed on administrative as is policy pending the investigation. The sheriff’s office has not yet released the deputy’s name.
