Horse owner charged with 20 counts of animal cruelty

DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR)  – Dinwiddie County Animal Control filed the first charges in the case against a county horse owner accused of mistreating her animals.

Sara Johnson was charged with 20 counts of of misdemeanor animal cruelty during a court hearing Thursday. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, June 4, in Dinwiddie General District Court.

Dinwiddie County Animal Control seized horses, donkeys and dogs from Johnson’s property back on Wednesday May 16, 2012.  County Animal Control will continue to care for the animals until they can find new homes. Twenty eight of the animals, including 16 equines, have already been moved from the property, according to Dinwiddie County Fire Chief Dennis Hale.

Hale said one horse has died and two dogs were euthanized due to their health conditions.

The county asked anyone willing to help care for the animals through donations to call Dinwiddie County Animal Control at (804) 469-4547.
