RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A Richmond Public Schools student was killed in a Friday morning accident along Old Westham Road near Cherokee Road in South Richmond, according to Richmond police.

Police said 18-year-old Antonio Shands Jr., of the 600 block of Yorkshire Drive, died at the scene.

RPD's Karla Peters said Shands attended Huguenot High School.

Neighbors told CBS 6 News' Shelby Brown that a pickup truck and a car with teenagers inside collided when one of the vehicles ran a stop sign. Residents spotted people being pulled from the wreckage and transported to the hospital.

According to police, Shands was a passenger in the car that was heading west on Old Westham Road. Police said the car did not stop when it approached the intersection with Cherokee.

When the sedan ran the stop sign, police said a pickup truck traveling north on Cherokee hit the car on the passenger side.

Police said there were four other people in the sedan besides Shands. The other passengers -- and the driver of the pickup -- did not have life-threatening injuries.

Richmond police said their investigation into the accident is ongoing and that charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
